Pat Metheny’s Orchestrion Preview
This Pat Metheny Orchestrion preview offers a fascinating glimpse into an ambitious acoustic experiment. Rather than relying on digital loops or a traditional backing band, Metheny performs alongside an intricate, mechanically controlled ensemble of instruments. The setup includes everything from congas and marimbas to a piano and tuned glass bottles, all physically rigged to respond to his live guitar playing. It’s a compelling look at how mechanical precision can interact with jazz improvisation, showcasing a unique approach to solo performance that bridges the gap between technology and acoustic music.

This is simply amazing. I’ve seem it all now. He’s a Platinum Genius.
As Director of LEMUR, the group who created most of the instruments for the Orchestrion, I was thrilled to be a part of this project. If you want to hear more work on LEMUR’s instruments, check out LEMUR’s other videos at lemurbots.org
Metheny is so creative. Orchestrion takes the idea of a player piano and extends it about as far as it can go! Very innovative.
