After seeing Gerald Albright post about him being on Cameo, I did a little research into other contemporary jazz musicians who might be available on the service.

Cameo provides a platform for users to purchase personalized video messages from celebrities, musicians, athletes, and other public figures. This includes jazz musicians! Users can browse profiles and choose someone they would like to receive a video from, then place an order for a custom message. The selected personality will then record a video message specifically for the user, which can be used for birthdays, anniversaries, or pretty much any occassion.

Here are some musicians on Cameo that would be of interest to contemporary jazz fans and their current rate for recording a video:

Nathan East is a founding member of Fourplay and has played on over 2000 recordings! John Patitucci has played with jazz legends Wayne Shorter and Chick Corea! Both of these gentlemen will record a video for you for under a Benjamin!

Happy birthday, Arturo Sandoval!

Happy birthday to one of my very favorite trumpeters, Arturo Sandoval (born in 1949)!

His birthday falls on a very important election day in the U.S., the country where Sandoval has been a naturalized citizen for twenty years. He defected from Cuba in 1990. Learn about Sandoval’s flight to freedom.

Here are three of my favorite pieces featuring the trumpet legend:

“Funky Cha Cha” – A blistering song with extra hot sauce from Michael Brecker

“Angelfire” – This cut from the Rippingtons’ Black Diamond release lets Arturo let loose a bit at the end. You can always count on the man to deliver. And it’s a good Russ Freeman composition and production, easily one of the best “cool fire” tracks in my library.

Leonid and Friends is a collective of Russian musicians who have been doing excellent covers of songs by the band Chicago. One of their latest is “Street Player” which features Arturo maybe sitting in his house, sitting down and still blowing out an incredible solo. He even hits an impossibly high note that I don’t think I’ve ever heard a trumpeter do before.

Grammy Report: Chick Corea with Foo Fighters, JT with Arturo Sandoval

OK, I watched the Grammys and wasn’t as bad as I’d feared. The Foo Fighters and Chick Corea collaboration was great. I’m thinking Chick was ready for a smoke and a lay after rocking with those guys. I was surprised to see Arturo Sandoval perform with Justin Timberlake. I love the jazz and pop/rock combos, but I would like to see the pop/rock guys tackling a jazz song instead of the other way around. Even better, I’d like to see the return of jazz artists performing their own music on the broadcast.

So who won? You have to go to the Grammy site to find out. In the last few years, the broadcast quickly showed them on the side when getting ready to go to break. This year, they gave up and said go to the website. The “Metheny Always Wins” mandate holds true – he’s the winner of Best New Age Album. No surprise to see Wayne Shorter pick up Best Jazz Instrumental Album for Alegria. Randy Brecker, Michel Camilo, Dianne Reeves, Michael Brecker, and Chick Corea were other jazz Grammy winners.

Thanks to OutKast closing the show, I’m going to have “Hey Ya!” in my head all night.
