Sunlightsquare, Soulphiction, and Dave Douglas News Bits

SunlightsquareImagine if the drum’n’bass programming on some electronic songs were done by live musicians. I’m sure it’s been done, but I’m not sure if the musicians were Steve Gadd and Will Lee. It happens on a new project by pianist Claudio Passavanti under the label and name Sunlightsquare. This recording defines jazztronica. It’s a perfect hybrid of jazz acoustica and electronica. If I did a spotlight record of the month feature, this would be it. It is due for release on May 8 but that may be just in the UK. No U.S. date is available at . . Soulphiction, aka Michel Baumann, covers the Bob James classic “Angela” on his just-released State of Euphoria. . . Dave Douglas will be chatting online tomorrow night at his Greenleaf Music site. He’s been especially prolific in the last eighteen months and his latest, Meaning and Mystery, came out last week.
