You might have seen the One Night with Blue Note: The Historic All-Star Reunion Concert DVD recently. It’s a recording of the 1985 concert held when the Blue Note label was resurrected. It gathered artists associated with the historic label in the past as well as recently signed artists and included Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, Joe Henderson, Stanley Jordan, Stanley Turrentine, Cecil Taylor, and many more. If you have cable, you can go further back – to the origin of the label. The True Stories cable channel is currently running “Blue Note: A History of Modern Jazz,” a two-hour documentary about how German immigrants Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff started the label. Check your cable listings for airtimes.
