I had never heard Wayne Shorter’s voice until recently on XM Beyond Jazz. I was surprised at the otherworldly calmness in his tone. What he said was more surprising. I can’t reproduce his words but they were inspiring and thought-provoking. Apparently, this serenity is commonplace as his biography Footprints: The Life and Work of Wayne Shorter indicates. According to the review at the Kansas City Star, Herbie Hancock and author Michelle Mercer agree on Shorter’s positivity. The book is receiving excellent reviews for its coverage of Shorter’s musical and personal life. Read a few pages at Amazon.com (TomorrowJazz earns a percentage of the purchase through this link). I’m looking forward to reading it.
