Review:
Brian Hughes
Live

Review by John Luciano
In this age of full disclosure, I have to come clean and admit that I’ve been a fan of Brian Hughes’ music since I picked up his first U.S. release, Between Dusk and Dreaming. I was immediately hooked on his lyrical, upbeat, percussively laden, Metheny-Montgomery-Benson sound. So, when I stumbled upon his latest release, Live, it was instant gratification – thank you iTunes! Hughes’ brand of jazz has always leaned towards an exotic blend of Latin and World influences coupled with extended guitar synth runs and keyboard solos (listen to the track "Nasca Lines"), and this release continues this killer combination. On Live, Brian and his band mates really had a chance to stretch out and play, plus the sound quality of this independent release is extremely clean and well mixed. Whether you’re already a fan of Hughes or if you’re unfamiliar with his music – pick this recording up, you won’t be disappointed.
