According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Herbie Hancock’s next release will be another all-star jam. Sting, Annie Lennox, and John Mayer have recorded tracks. One session had Wayne Shorter, Prince, and Joni Mitchell and more tracks are planned with Alicia Keys, Carlos Santana, Dave Matthews, Paul Simon, and Yo-Yo Ma. It’s due on August 2 on Verve.
I had thought that the Chick Corea Elektric Band reunion was a one-shot CD and tour. Apparently, that is not the case. Down Beat has a cover story on Corea talking about the band and how it still challenges him creatively. Ric Fierabracci has replaced John Patitucci on bass. Corea is also forming a new band called Touchstone.
Eric Marienthal is going more acoustic on his next solo release, which is coming this fall. Hey, if it’s more along the lines of 1990’s Crossroads, put me at the top of the waiting list. Marienthal is an underrated and versatile saxman. I’ve been disappointed by his solo discs, which somehow fail to show the range of his abilities.
