Never before have I watched a video and found myself nodding and saying ‘yes!’. This is a trailer for the four-part series Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense, which premieres April 15 on the Documentary Channel. I couldn’t be more excited to see contemporary jazz get the spotlight like this. The filmmakers interviewed what looks like hundreds of artists making jazz in the 21st century, from Bugge Wesseltoft to Wayne Shorter, from Soulive to Herbie Hancock, from the Greyboy Allstars to Melvin Sparks.
Two of the greatest things in life: the year-end holidays and free music. Joyce Cooling is offering both – a free MP3 of her new original composition “It’s Feeling Like Christmas.” It’s a nice seasonal song. You can download it at Joyce’s site. No signing up for a mailing list or anything. Just download it.
Between this and her rendition of “The Christmas Song” from the GRP compilation Making Spirits Bright, she’s getting enough songs for a full holiday record, inevitably titled Joyce to the World. Just kidding.
MTV is playing videos again! Online, at least at their newly launched mtvmusic.com. I checked it out and – whoa – there are over 100 videos in the jazz category. I wasn’t even expecting a jazz category. There are a lot of Kenny G and Norah Jones videos but also a number of 80s Warner Bros. videos from the likes of Al Jarreau, Bob James, David Sanborn, Michael Franks, George Benson, Quincy Jones, and Miles Davis. Seeing some of these again is kind of a kick. I bet you’ll find some surprises too.
