Herbie Hancock on TV Tonight

Herbie Hancock will be on tonight’s episode of The Screen Savers, a great computer program that airs each weeknight on the TechTV cable channel. Herbie talks about some new technology that he’s integrating into his concerts. The Screen Savers airs at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. CST tonight.

It’s been four years since his last solo release, but David Sanborn has a new CD on the way. Verve/GRP has an untitled release by the alto saxman on the schedule for May 13.

Latin Jazz DVD with Corea, Sandoval

Miami Jam - A Celebration of Latin JazzI don’t have this on my New Releases list, but a new DVD and VHS came out today called Miami Jam – A Celebration of Latin Jazz. The concert recording features musicians like Chick Corea, Arturo Sandoval, Pete Escovedo, Poncho Sanchez, Dave Valentin, Dave Samuels, and more celebrating their Latin heritage and/or influence. You can order the DVD or VHS at Amazon.com (a portion of your purchase benefits this site).

First Quarter Forecast

It’s looking like an excellent start to 2003 in progressive jazz. Slammin’ saxman Bill Evans lets loose Big Fun in the U.S. on February 4. Look for Christian McBride’s fusion release, Vertical Vision on February 11. Stefon Harris’ ambitious 13-piece suite for 12 musicians, Grand Unification Theory, also hits on February 11. Spyro Gyra returns on February 25 with Original Cinema. Kenny Garrett has a follow-up to his excellent Happy People CD in March. Three key Crusaders reunite for Rural Renewal on March 4. Verve has a new Wayne Shorter release listed for March 25. Charlie Hunter’s latest, Right Now Move also is available on March 25. Ethnomusicology Vol. 3 is due from Russell Gunn this first quarter as well. I’ll post more releases as I learn about them.
